eòlas (Scottish Gaelic for knowledge) is an AI-powered assessment platform designed specifically for Scottish secondary education. It uses artificial intelligence to mark student written submissions against official SQA marking instructions — the same criteria used in the real exam.
The goal is simple: give teachers hours back every week and give students faster, more consistent feedback on their practice work.
eòlas currently supports National 5 and Higher English, covering both Reading for Understanding, Analysis and Evaluation (RUAE) and Critical Reading papers, using SQA past papers from 2015 to 2025 (excluding 2020, when no exam was held). Additional subjects are in development — contact us to register interest in your subject.
The AI is trained on official SQA marking instructions and produces results consistent with how a trained marker would approach the paper. However, AI marking is not infallible — it works best on structured responses where mark points are clearly definable.
Educators always retain the ability to review, adjust, and override any AI-generated mark. eòlas is designed to support professional judgement, not replace it.
No. eòlas is an independent platform that uses SQA past papers and published marking instructions (which are publicly available) as the basis for its AI assessment engine. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or partnered with the Scottish Qualifications Authority.
Create an educator account, then set up a marking project for your class. You can add students by email address, or if your school uses Microsoft Teams, connect eòlas to your Teams class and import students automatically. Students receive an invitation to create their free account.
eòlas accepts PDF documents and common word processor formats (DOCX). For best results, submissions should be typed or, if handwritten, clearly scanned. If you're using Microsoft Teams, submissions flow through the Teams assignment directly.
Yes — always. After a marking run, you see every submission with its AI-generated marks and feedback. You can review each one, adjust marks, add your own annotations, and choose when to share results with students. Nothing is shared automatically without your approval.
Connect your school Microsoft account to eòlas once via the Teams connection page. eòlas can then see your Teams class assignments and import submitted student work directly. Your school IT administrator may need to authorise the connection — the process follows Microsoft's standard admin consent flow.
Absolutely. eòlas works well for formative practice — running a past paper mid-term and giving students rapid feedback — as well as end-of-unit summative tasks. Many teachers use it most heavily in the lead-up to the SQA diet as a revision tool.
Yes, completely. Student accounts are always free. Your teacher uses credits to run the marking session — you don't need to pay anything or provide payment details.
Once your teacher adds you to a project, you'll find it on your student dashboard. Upload your completed essay or paper as a PDF or Word document. If your teacher uses Microsoft Teams for assignments, you may submit through Teams as normal and it will appear in eòlas automatically.
The AI generates results within seconds to a minute of submission, but your teacher reviews the results before sharing them. Once approved, you'll get a notification. In many cases you'll have feedback within the same lesson or within a few hours of submitting.
Only if your teacher sets up parent access for the project and links a parent account. Your results are private by default — visible only to you and your teacher unless parent visibility is explicitly enabled.
Your child's teacher sets up parent access when they add your child to a project. You'll receive an invitation by email with instructions to create your free account. You can also register at eòlas independently and link to your child's profile once their teacher grants access.
Your parent dashboard shows a summary of your child's recent submissions, scores, and feedback themes. You can see how they performed on specific papers and where they're losing marks. You cannot see other students' work or results.
Yes — parent accounts are always completely free. No payment details are ever required.
Account data and submission records are stored on secure EU-based servers. Personal data (name, email, mobile) is encrypted at rest using AES-256 encryption. Student submissions are processed by our AI provider for assessment purposes only, and are not used to train external AI models.
eòlas is designed to comply with UK GDPR. We collect only the personal data necessary to deliver the service, process it on a lawful basis, and respect all data subject rights including access, correction, and erasure. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
Student submissions are retained within your account and accessible only to the relevant educator, student, and any linked parent. They are never shared with third parties for commercial purposes. You can request deletion of any submission or your entire account at any time.
You can request account deletion from your account settings, or by emailing hello@failte.dev. We'll process your request within 30 days and confirm by email when your data has been removed.
